The past year has been full of uncertainty. There were many moments of longing for a home, longing for a place that felt safe and stable. It was not just a physical place we were searching for, but a metaphorical place. That place came with a decision to move forward in a new direction with hope and anticipation. This is the breathtakingly peaceful view from the hill (mountain to this Michigander) behind our house here in British Columbia. I took this reference photo on our very second walk out in the world after two weeks of mind-numbing quarantine. With that first walk, with this view, we were able to exhale, to let go and find peace in knowing that we were finally home. I truly hope this this view brings you the same feeling of peace and contentedness.
This painting will bring a sense of calm to any space it inhabits but it would make the perfect statement piece above a bed or a couch.

About The Learning To Fly Collection:
Tom Petty music will always bring me back to carefree, peaceful summer memories. The following lyrics in particular have felt very relevant as I’ve created this collection of paintings:
"I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings. Coming down is the hardest thing. Well, the good old days may not return, and the rocks might melt and the sea may burn."
As I've begun this creative journey I feel as though I am learning to fly all over again. These lyrics also seem to capture the feeling of the world right now. The “good old days may not return”, yet perhaps something much more beautiful will remain after this moment in history. Perhaps we will be kinder to our neighbours, appreciate nature more than ever before, and open our eyes more readily to the injustice in the world. Perhaps we can be better.
