I set off to create a collection of landscapes that embody the sentiment of summertime…and then the Okanagan had the rainiest, chilliest, least summer-y month of June imaginable. And that is how this painting was born. Summer is fleeting and full of expectations, and sometimes we are disappointed when things don’t go to plan. So this painting is a reminder that it is okay to just stay in some days. Cuddle up on the couch, play a board game, take a nap…there will be another day to take that hike or go to the beach or to take that dream vacation that was shut down by a global pandemic.

About The Learning To Fly Collection:
Tom Petty music will always bring me back to carefree, peaceful summer memories. The following lyrics in particular have felt very relevant as I’ve created this collection of paintings:
"I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings. Coming down is the hardest thing. Well, the good old days may not return, and the rocks might melt and the sea may burn."
As I've begun this creative journey I feel as though I am learning to fly all over again. These lyrics also seem to capture the feeling of the world right now. The “good old days may not return”, yet perhaps something much more beautiful will remain after this moment in history. Perhaps we will be kinder to our neighbours, appreciate nature more than ever before, and open our eyes more readily to the injustice in the world. Perhaps we can be better.
