Somewhere You Feel Free” original oil painting by Melanie Fenton

“You belong among the wildflowers. You belong somewhere close to me. Far away from your trouble and worry, you belong somewhere you feel free.”

This painting is enchanting and hopeful. It conjures up the freedom and romance of summer nights. And it just radiates. I named it for another Petty song, one of my favourites in fact. Those words sit in my heart and I hear them every time I come across a scene like this in nature.

Some days it is hard to remain hopeful. I think a lot of people, myself included, are just trying to survive the way the world is right now. It can be intensely overwhelming but a mountaintop view or a stroll through a field of wildflowers always seems to help. I think we all need a lot of reminding that it is ok to take breaks, to need more of them, to allow them to happen anywhere. This is why art is such an incredible thing. It allows you a break, a chance to enjoy something beautiful, for as long or as short as you'd like, as often as you need.

This painting was inspired by a captivating picture captured by local photographer Sergei Turner. I am honestly so in love with this painting I want to keep it but I’ll settle for a print so that someone else can enjoy her in all of her glory. This piece radiates happiness and calm and is sure to make a big statement in your home.

Size: 24” x 36” x 1.5”

Medium: Oil paint on premier gallery wrapped canvas. Signed on the front, signed and titled on the back. Ready to hang.

About The Learning To Fly Collection:

Tom Petty music will always bring me back to carefree, peaceful summer memories. The following lyrics in particular have felt very relevant as I’ve created this collection of paintings:

"I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings. Coming down is the hardest thing. Well, the good old days may not return, and the rocks might melt and the sea may burn."

As I've begun this creative journey I feel as though I am learning to fly all over again. These lyrics also seem to capture the feeling of the world right now. The “good old days may not return”, yet perhaps something much more beautiful will remain after this moment in history. Perhaps we will be kinder to our neighbours, appreciate nature more than ever before, and open our eyes more readily to the injustice in the world. Perhaps we can be better.
