"Wish I Were Fishing" - 24x24 inch oil painting

One June morning we drove to this lake to go fishing and instead we went on a bear hunt. The wind was blowing and the water was too rough for our little boat, so we made the most of it and with our imaginative three year old, searched for bear poop and bear hair and bear tracks-without success. We did see two young grizzlies on the drive up to the lake though. All this to say, sometimes plans change. Sometimes the weather disappoints. Sometimes you don't get to go fishing. You could just go home, or you could go on a bear hunt!
This painting is full of emotion and movement and moodiness, yet at the same time it is bright and uplifting. This probably reflects the many stages it went though as I created it. I fought with it for a while and felt like giving up a few times. There is frustration in some of the strokes and epiphany and peace in others. This painting makes a bold statement and somewhat like a mood ring seems to adapt to how you’re feeling.

About The Learning To Fly Collection:
Tom Petty music will always bring me back to carefree, peaceful summer memories. The following lyrics in particular have felt very relevant as I’ve created this collection of paintings:
"I'm learning to fly but I ain't got wings. Coming down is the hardest thing. Well, the good old days may not return, and the rocks might melt and the sea may burn."
As I've begun this creative journey I feel as though I am learning to fly all over again. These lyrics also seem to capture the feeling of the world right now. The “good old days may not return”, yet perhaps something much more beautiful will remain after this moment in history. Perhaps we will be kinder to our neighbours, appreciate nature more than ever before, and open our eyes more readily to the injustice in the world. Perhaps we can be better.
