"Ignite Your Bones" an original oil painting by Melanie Fenton - 2024
This piece balances wildness and softness, with gestural marks and transparent blended layers. The yellow-greens are simultaneously calming and energizing in a way that feels just right. I worked through the layers of this piece, searching for solutions, as I navigated personal challenges. The title is inspired by the Coldplay song, “Fix You”, which always makes me cry.
These paintings explore the magic of shadows swaying and playing in our environment and in our minds. This work has been part of a practice in softening and gentleness with myself, for others, and in my painting process. I am leaning into softness, transparency, wildness, ease, imperfection, impermanence and acceptance through this work.
Shadows, though themselves dark, are evidence of light. Shadows of plants are evidence of life. But none of it can be grasped. And none of it can be held. The leaves flutter, the sun moves along its predictable and ever-shifting path (okay, technically the earth is moving). Moment to moment they are never static. Nothing is. And that's the whole point. None of it stays, and we love anyway.
