“Winter Without Snow” original oil painting by Melanie Fenton - 2026
I painted this piece as a release from the heaviness of the world (mainly USA) right now. I realized after I had placed the initial layers, that the colours were that of this winter. My running route weaves through a small park full of willows and shrubs surrounding a pond. Without snow, the browns, purple/reds and yellows stand out against the grey of winter. I am grateful for the beauty beneath, but to me, the missing snow is loud: we are in a climate emergency. And yet, all around us we have no choice but to ignore it and attend to the long list of other man-made disasters.
If you’re feeling it all deeply, like me, well I can recommend painting and getting outside. It helps. Interesting though, whenever I paint this kind of deep, deep grief, it comes out as light, hope.
